acknowledged. Leadership is about character, and
character determines the moral nature of your decisionmaking and is what defines and shapes your ideals. This is
a type of moral compass that enables a leader to stay on
course while adjusting to conditions as they change. It is
your vulnerability as a leader that provides space for those
around you to also be vulnerable. The key is to navigate
those vulnerable/affirming spaces in ways that do not
weaponize it against those exposing their hearts.
Courage can be found in leadership by leaders having
the will to be and do for others what they need when they
need it. It is being a champion for them and having the
desire to fight for a cause greater than yourself. This
courage gives you a voice to speak on behalf of others
when everything they have is on the line. I see it as
leveraging your position and privilege to bring others
forward.
There is an important leader in my life (Dr. Suzy
Ames) who I got to know over the course of several years
while I was a custodian at a college. Through a few
