To dismantle the myth of professionalism, we must
reimagine it through an inclusive lens, a lens that
challenges us and doesn’t allow us to simply check a box
and call it inclusivity. We must be willing to explore
alternative models of professionalism that value diverse
perspectives, different leadership styles, and lived
experiences. The importance of cultural competence,
empathy, and authentic representation in fostering an
inclusive professional culture is at the core of what we
categorize professionalism, and I encourage you to look at
it through a lens that causes you to see the world not just
as it is, but as it should be.
Success and leadership are often defined by narrow
standards that perpetuate the view that white males are
under attack and are being denied opportunities because
space is being made for others to advance. Until we
challenge these false notions and explore alternative
visions of success and leadership that honor and celebrate
a diverse range of talents, skills, and experiences, we will
continue to promote the status quo and miss valuable
