When Leadership Matters
You see, I didn’t fit their mold of comfort at the time
and was overlooked for traits they deemed more
acceptable. They did not recognize their biases in
overlooking me for a role I was clearly capable of
performing. As a result, time, money, and other resources
were wasted that could have been saved. Sometimes, what
you need comes draped in a package you overlook because
you don’t like what the package is wrapped in.
To overcome these implications and foster a highperforming team environment, leaders should prioritize
hiring practices that value qualifications, skills, and
potential over-familiarity. They should actively seek out
candidates from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and
perspectives. By embracing the expance of experiences that
come through cultural exchange, leaders can create a team
culture that encourages open dialogue, fosters innovation,
and enables the team to thrive in today's complex, multicultural and dynamic business landscape.
Creating lasting change requires collective action and
forward-thinking strategies for individuals, organizations,
and communities to challenge and disrupt biases, comfort,
and the myth of professionalism as it currently stands.
