that role, I was able to leverage my gift of observation, and
I drummed up the courage to write a letter to them about
several of the things I observed and in it asked them for an
opportunity to work in Human Resources and to my
surprise, they gave me the job of Human Resources
Manager. They took a risk of course, but they also saw my
potential. I did not know anything about the role, but I
applied what I observed and asked questions. I called
other professionals in that role at other companies and
informed them that I was new to my role and requested an
opportunity to shadow them for a few hours a day and just
ask questions. I grew that company from approximately 30
employees to over 100 during my 4 years with the
company. Those leaders (Anne & Molly) saw me and gave
me the opportunity to display my gifts, and I will be
forever indebted to them.
By acknowledging and confronting anti-blackness
within organizations or teams, we can create workplaces
that embrace and respect individual differences, and
provide equal opportunities for everyone to thrive and
succeed. Mind you, these are intentional acts, and while
