Leadership without ethical guideposts and principles
can lead to corruption and self-serving behavior, as
evidenced in politics, business, religion, and financial
markets around the world. Leaders can become jaded and
lose sight of the importance of considering the needs of
others, often taking risks that put those individuals in
jeopardy. As a result, effective leadership requires a strong
commitment to ethical principles that guide decisionmaking and action-taking.
Not everyone is cut out to lead, and yet many are
placed in leadership positions and roles that ultimately
cause harm to others. There are also those who are called
to leadership and take it as an honor, a challenge, and take
the responsibility of leading to heart because leading is
about people and how they have to function within the
systems they must navigate to become successful. Many
leaders are born out of necessity, and they step forward in
times of crisis and challenge when others can’t or won’t.
They find the courage to lead the charge when all
indicators suggest that they will fail, yet they influence
