Chapter 7. Leading with Fairness
As leaders, it is essential to approach situations with
clarity, fairness, and directness, especially when group
dynamics are at play. The notion that we must determine
that everyone is in trouble when something goes wrong
instead of addressing a specific person directly is not only
misguided but can also lead to detrimental consequences
for both the team and the organization. Let's spend a few
moments exploring why it is not a viable approach:
By punishing everyone for the actions of one
individual, we create an environment where personal
accountability is diluted. Colleagues may feel that their
efforts and hard work go unnoticed, leading to a decrease
in morale and motivation. Treating everyone as if they are
in trouble when only one person is responsible is
inherently unfair. The entire notion of “being in trouble” is
so outdated. It punishes innocent colleagues for something
they may not have been involved in or aware of, leading to
resentment and decreased trust in leadership.
Failing to address a specific person directly means we
miss the opportunity to understand the root cause of an
