leaders can:
Lean into the discomfort that coaching can sometimes
present. Promote open communication through a culture
where open dialogue is encouraged, and colleagues feel
comfortable discussing issues and concerns with
leadership and among each other. Especially when
leadership needs to hear a hard truth about themselves
and the impact of their style on the organization or
workgroup.
Investigate and understand the underlying cause of
the problem before taking any action. Address the issue
directly with the person responsible and offer guidance for
improvement. Hold people accountable for their actions
but do so in a fair and consistent manner. Leaders should
acknowledge when they are the issue and first assume
responsibility for that.
Demonstrate trust in your colleagues by giving them
autonomy and responsibility. Trust is fundamental to
successful leadership. Offer feedback that is specific,
actionable, and aimed at promoting growth and
