When Leadership Matters
in fact, poisoned pills. By nature, we are predisposed or
conditioned to believe that leaders are called to a higher
standard and, therefore, expect more from them. When
they fall short of that expectation, it is often a fall that
many can’t get up from.
Compromise is an important trait in leadership that we
spoke of earlier. Knowing where to draw the line and
when to draw the line are important actions leaders must
master. Leaders must have a clear conscience about
decision-making when compromise is on the table. They
must keep in mind who will be affected, what will be the
benefits of, and what losses I’m willing to take based on
this compromise. Modern history and politics are littered
with both great and poor compromises. Compromise
generally works in the best interest of the best negotiator.
Having a clear picture of what is at risk and what is to be
gained is paramount. Leaders must always assess the level
of risk associated with their actions and the underlying
concerns that prompted the compromise in the first place.
Failing to do so could be catastrophic to an organization,
its credibility, and its ability to negotiate.
